18th Street Lounge, Washington DC [night, NFB]

Eric had wanted to drive all the way to New York to find a really interesting club, but decided that as nice as his sports car was (and it was very nice), a date that required a four hour one-way roadtrip was probably a terrible idea.

Which was why he and Jaina were now letting the valets at the 18th Street Lounge try to find parking in Dupont Circle. Eric grinned down at her as he held the door open. "We're just in time. They have tango lessons at 8 on Tuesdays."

Eric, it must be noted, liked winning bets.

"Though it is a great mental image," she countered. It was one that was going to stick with her, too.

"It's the shoes, huh," Eric said.

[solo_sword]

"Definitely the shoes," she nodded. "Though I'm sure you'd find some way to make them work." Probably because the rest of him was so very high above the shoes.

"I might buy my own," Eric replied with a grin.

"You know now that anytime I come into the club I'm going to be looking at your shoes," Jaina warned. Yeah, that would happen.

"Do they make shiny black bowling shoes?" Eric wondered.

[solo_sword]

"Couldn't even begin to tell you," she replied. "Also I think that would be cheating."

"I'm not sure I'm really the mismatched shoe type," said the man who had a bright pink spandex unitard for no apparent reason.

[solo_sword]

"Probably not," Jaina agreed. "But if you don't mind- and even if you do- I'll keep the mental image for my own."

Eric smiled. "Well, as long as you're happy."

[solo_sword]

"Hey, unless you can read my mind-" ...Oh, please don't be able to read her mind. "-you'd never have to know," she smiled back.

"I can't," Eric said. "Can you read mine?"

That wasn't as casual a question as his tone might indicate.

"No. That is very gladly not one of my talents." Okay, she was still a little sorry she couldn't read Zekk's mind anymore, but that was a whole other story.

"I've spent time with some of Sookie's friends," Eric said with a rueful smile. "They can't read my mind, but can read each other's. It's both useful and...creepy."

"Yeah. Okay, I might have had something like what it sounds like they do, but it was temporary," she admitted. "And I've also heard that was creepy. They really can't read you?"

"I don't have brain waves now," Eric said, thinking vaguely that this was kind of strange small talk "so there's nothing to read."

[solo_sword]

Immediately Jaina had to shut up that logical part of her brain that wanted to go over that for a minute. That way led confusion and possibly very personal questions. "I'm not allowed to think too hard on that," she decided.

"That seems like the better option," Eric agreed. "You look beautiful tonight, by the way."

In terms of subtle segues, this wasn't in the running.

Jaina smiled. "Thank you. And that was a very impressive change of subject."

"I'm very impressive," Eric said modestly.

[solo_sword]

"If you're looking for disagreement from me there..." Well, he wouldn't get it, honestly. She was kind of impressed, which didn't happen with many people.

He smiled, amused. "I bet if you disagree with me about something, I'll know it."

[solo_sword]

"I can't imagine what you might be talking about," she said with total faux innocence.

"Does that ever work for you?" Eric laughed, leading her through a rather complicated set of dance steps.

He was definitely showing off now, and she was determined to keep up. "Never once. Not even when it's genuine, believe it or not."
