Eric was opening the club tonight, a move that kind of shocked the DJ when he arrived five minutes late.

After being assured Eric wouldn't eat him this time, the DJ promised to play whatever Eric wanted.

Turned out the DJ didn't have ancient Norse ballads.

The new DJ would be there tomorrow. Tonight you were subjected to the contents of Eric's iPod.

There were plenty of ancient Norse ballads on that.

Irina eyed the tall man in the VIP section for a few moments before making her way toward him. She was of above-average height, with dark curls falling out of a loose braid, and dressed in a man's shirt worn loose over a deep navy ankle-length skirt. Her speech was clear but marked with a thick Russian accent.

"Hello," she said. "Is this your club?"

"It is," Eric replied, nodding his head. "You like it?"

"It looks expensive," Irina decided. "Clean. I like the design. The music is -- different. Reminds me of an old friend."

"Your old friend like old Norse music?" Eric replied.

"I think he was Norse," Irina volunteered, with a little shrug. "I keep running into people who like old things."

Or she had been a fangbanger. Same difference.

"What brings you here?" Eric asked. "I would have remembered seeing you."

Because he had eyes and a memory for pretty women.

Irina knew it was a line, but she smiled anyhow. "I'm visiting Jack Priest," she said, waving vaguely toward him. "He told me he works here."

Her tone held some modulated surprise. Of all the millions of things she'd thought Jack might have done with his life, managing a club had not been on the list.

"My name's Irina."

Irina's eyebrows went up. "Is he good at what he does?"

"I don't hire people who are bad at their jobs," Eric said. "Yes, he is a good day person."

"You might have thought he was pretty," Irina said, unabashed. "I am glad he's found a place where he fits."

"He is also very pretty," Eric replied, "But that wasn't my first consideration. Was it yours?"

"Yes," Irina said, with shifty eyes. "But it did not hurt that he was the ward of a wampyr I wanted to get to know."

So maybe the relationship had been a little twisted.

"Attempt at a power play on your part?" Eric guessed. It certainly wasn't the first time he'd heard of seducing the companion to get to the vampire.

He'd done it himself.

Irina shook her head. "Not power, but my ... patron had moved on, and there weren't many of the blood who came to Moscow who could have replaced him," she explained. "But Jack was trying to prove he was a man, so he was at least as bad as I was."

"Sounds very trying for the vampire in question," Eric replied.

"Maybe. I suppose you would have told us both to be on our way until we could act like adults?" Irina asked, a surprised smile playing around her mouth. She hadn't thought about it at the time, but Sebastien really had displayed extraordinary patience.

"That would have been me being quite forgiving," Eric admitted.

Irina shrugged. "You would have had to see Jack with Sebastien," she said. "When I was little my family had two dogs, and the older one let the puppy eat first and take the place closer to the fireplace. But when the large one growled, the small one fell back. They reminded me of that. Sebastien was very free with us as long as we knew who he was."

Eric nodded. "My maker taught me a slightly different viewpoint."

Unconsciously, his head tilted in the direction Godric was now--out in the woods, finding supper.

"Sebastien was just -- odd," Irina explained, watching the tilt of Eric's head. It wasn't hard to guess what it might be about. "Is your maker here?"

Eric nodded once. "And he shouldn't be. He died several years ago."

"But isn't it good to see him again?" Irina asked, with a tiny frown.
